IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people think that it’s a good idea to socialise with work colleagues during evenings and weekends. Other people think it’s important to keep working life completely separate from social life.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
It is argued by some people that individuals should socialise with their co-workers after office hours, whereas others believe that it is necessary to keep professional life separate from personal life. I agree with the latter view, and I will discuss both perspectives in my upcoming paragraphs.
To begin with, socialising after business hours can increase the professional bonding between colleagues. In other words, they are able to spend more time with each other, so it can allow them to discuss in-detail about projects as well as know them personally. For example, during working hours, they just chase to complete work by deadline and eventually, little time left to communicate each other, but this is the way they can know their staff well. Consequently, it will create a positive working environment at workplace.
Nevertheless, others consider that they should maintain a balance between work and social life. Firstly, if employees allocate their social time with their colleagues, they may not be give sufficient time to their families which is extremely important in human life. Moreover, a constant working environment could raise their stress level because they spend the majority of time with same people and discuss tasks related things more than usual. For instance, if a person continues to meet office people even after their scheduled hours, they cannot provide enough time with their loved ones. As a result, this behaviour might reduce connection with their family members.
In conclusion, although spending extra time with co-workers can make a strong bond with them, I opine that this can increase the mental stress. For this reason, people should manage work-life meticulosly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and state a clear preference for keeping work and personal life separate. The first body paragraph gives a relevant benefit of socialising with colleagues—stronger professional bonds and a more positive workplace—and the second explains possible costs to family time and stress. These points answer the question, but they are not developed equally: the benefits paragraph mainly describes extra time to talk, while the drawbacks are repeated in similar terms rather than explored with a distinct example or fuller explanation. Your conclusion also introduces mental stress as the main reason for your position, although the argument could connect this more explicitly to the family-time point. Develop each view with a specific, clearly explained example and make the reasoning behind your opinion more precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “Nevertheless,” and “In conclusion” help readers recognise the stages of the argument. You also use cause-and-effect links, including “Consequently” and “As a result.” To make the organisation more flexible and less formulaic, vary these transitions and ensure each sentence advances a distinct point. For example, the family-time idea appears in both “they may not be give sufficient time to their families” and the later example about loved ones; the latter could instead add a concrete consequence or illustration. Clarifying references such as “this” would also make links between claims more exact.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “professional life,” “socialise,” “professional bonding,” “working environment,” and “mental stress.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and you attempt some less common or topic-specific expressions. However, several collocations or word choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “discuss in-detail about projects,” “chase to complete work,” and “working-life meticulosly.” “Social time with their colleagues” is also imprecise for the idea of spending free time together. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Focus on learning common word partnerships and checking spelling and word forms; for instance, use “discuss projects in detail” and “manage work and personal life carefully.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause in the opening and conditional structures such as “if employees allocate…” and “if a person continues…”. Most sentences remain understandable, and the errors do not generally obscure your meaning. Some grammatical problems persist, however: “they may not be give” should be “they may not be able to give,” and “little time left to communicate each other” needs a complete structure, such as “there is little time left to communicate with each other.” There are also issues with articles and prepositions in “at workplace” and “provide enough time with their loved ones.” Review verb patterns, sentence completeness, and prepositions, then proofread complex sentences to improve accuracy while retaining variety.
