Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's modern world, some people believe that spending evenings and weekends with colleagues will be beneficial while some people believe that working life and personal life should be kept separated to maintain mental peace in life.

On one hand, spending time with colleagues during evenings and weekends can prove to beneficial as colleagues will be able to communicate with each other freely, they can share their problems with colleagues as a friend, trust can be developed. They will feel more motivated and they will not hesitate to share any of their problems with their colleagues as they have already built trust.

On the other hand, some people feel that they only get evenings and weekends to spend time with their family and now if it becomes compulsory then they will have to give that time also to their colleagues, they will not get time to relax and family time will be lost. Sometimes disagreements among colleagues also affect their personal relationship. They feel uncomfortable. So keeping personal and professional life separate will help them to maintain work-life balance.

In my opinion, working life and personal life should be kept separated and socialising with colleagues is also important but there should not be any compulsion. Employees should have freedom to decide whether they want to socialise with colleagues or spend time with family or want to relax.

In conclusion, I believe socialising with colleagues is also important part but spending time with family is also important. It should depend on personal choice at what time what they want to do. Socialising with colleagues can help them to become more friendly while spending time with family will help them to maintain work-life balance.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You discuss both perspectives and give a clear personal view: you support keeping work and personal life separate while allowing voluntary socialising. The reasons are relevant, particularly the need for family time and the possibility that workplace disagreements may affect personal relationships. You also explain the benefits of trust and freer communication among colleagues. However, these points are mostly stated rather than developed: for example, you could show how trust improves teamwork or give a specific example of a disagreement crossing into private life. Your conclusion restates the main ideas but does not add much to the discussion. Developing the supporting reasons more fully would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. The signposts “On one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In my opinion” make the progression easy to follow. This clear organisation meets the expected level, and the main points are generally grouped appropriately. However, some links feel mechanical, and ideas within paragraphs are sometimes joined in long chains, such as the list of benefits beginning “colleagues will be able to communicate.” The conclusion also repeats points from the opinion paragraph rather than synthesising them. Use a wider range of linking methods and make the relationship between each reason and its consequence more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the topic, including relevant expressions such as “work-life balance,” “trust,” “motivated,” and “personal choice.” The meaning is generally clear, but the range is limited by repeated use of “colleagues,” “time,” and “important,” and some word combinations are inaccurate or unnatural. For instance, “maintain mental peace in life” and “spend time with colleagues as a friend” do not sound idiomatic in this context. “Compulsory” also suggests a formal requirement, whereas the point is more naturally expressed as socialising being expected or pressured. Aim for more precise collocations and vary repeated vocabulary while keeping the wording natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and subordinate clauses, and the overall meaning remains understandable. Some sentences are controlled, such as “Employees should have freedom to decide whether they want to socialise with colleagues or spend time with family.” However, there are several grammatical errors. In “can prove to beneficial,” the infinitive marker is followed by a missing “be”; “should be kept separated” uses an awkward passive construction; and “It should depend on personal choice at what time what they want to do” has an unclear clause structure. The opening sentence also has an agreement problem in “some people believe … while some people believe.” Check verb patterns, articles, and sentence boundaries, and revise long sentences for clearer structure.
