IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given graph illustrates the proportion of Australian men and women in distinct age groups who performed regular phyiscal activity in 2010.
Overall, we can observe that the proportion of women doing regular physical activity is greater than compared to male in every age group except 15 to 24, where the proportion of men is leading than females.
The highest proportion of females exercising regularly is in the age group of 45 to 54 by 53.3%, which is also the highest leading percentage compared to other age groups. Men were comparatively less active and the highest proportion of males recorded was in the age group 15 to 24 with 52.8%. The least active age group in females was 65 and over whereas, for men 35 to 44 was the age group which performed regular excerise the least 47.1% and 39.5% respectively.
In the initial age groups the females were less in proprotion compared to males but then kept leading throughtout the age groups.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main contrast accurately: women recorded higher activity in every age group except 15–24, and you report the key peaks for both sexes. The overview and selected figures show a sound understanding of the chart. However, one important detail is misreported: 47.1% is the figure for women aged 65 and over, not the least-active male group; the male low is correctly given as 39.5%. The statement that women “kept leading throughout” also needs qualification, since men lead in the first group. To strengthen the response further, describe the overall pattern more precisely: male activity falls to 35–44 before rising, while female activity rises to a peak at 45–54 and then declines.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement, moving from an introduction to an overview and then to supporting details. The final paragraph attempts to summarise the age-group pattern, and phrases such as “Overall” and “In the initial age groups” help signal progression. However, the last paragraph largely repeats the overview rather than adding a distinct comparison, and “then kept leading throughout” is unclear because women lead only after the first age group. Some linking is also awkward, particularly “whereas, for men,” in the sentence comparing the least active groups. Organise the body around the contrasting trends for men and women, and use references such as “this figure” only when their meaning is unmistakable.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “age groups,” “regular physical activity,” and “highest proportion.” These choices make the chart’s subject clear, and you attempt some variation with “performed” and “exercising.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “greater than compared to male,” “leading than females,” and “highest leading percentage.” There are also spelling errors in “phyiscal,” “excerise,” “proprotion,” and “throughtout.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and control. Prefer concise chart language such as “higher than,” “exceeded,” and “the highest rate,” and proofread carefully for spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “where the proportion of men is leading” and a contrast introduced by “whereas.” The main comparisons are generally understandable. However, some sentence structures are awkward or incomplete in their grammatical relationships. For example, “greater than compared to male” combines two comparison patterns, while “The least active age group in females was 65 and over whereas, for men 35 to 44 was the age group…” lacks a clear parallel structure and needs punctuation around the contrast. The final sentence also uses an unclear construction with “kept leading.” Build comparisons with consistent forms, such as “women’s rate was higher than men’s,” and check clause structure and commas.
