Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies the chart’s subject and attempts to describe an overall pattern, but it does not adequately summarise the data. The opening comparison is unclear and inaccurate: “the male proportion is higher than the male proportion” compares men with themselves, rather than men with women. “Medieval period” does not apply to the chart’s age groups, and the claim that the figures are “up and down” is too vague to convey the actual trends. No figures or clear comparisons are reported. The response is also 98 words below the required minimum, leaving most of the task unaddressed. To improve, give a clear overview—for example, men lead only in the youngest group, while women lead in the other five—and support it with selected figures and comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response using an opening overview and linking phrases such as “Overall” and “In addition.” However, the ideas do not form a clear progression: the first sentence is difficult to interpret, the reference to a “medieval period” does not connect logically to the age groups, and the final statement about the “last period” is not supported with a specific comparison. The response is presented as one short paragraph, with no separation between an overview and supporting details. Organise the answer into a brief introduction, an overview of the main trends, and one or two paragraphs comparing age groups. Use clear references such as “the youngest group” and “those aged 65 and over.”
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses a few relevant terms, including “percentage,” “proportion,” and “physical activity,” so the topic is recognisable. However, the vocabulary is too limited and imprecise for describing the chart’s comparisons and trends. “Medieval period” is an inappropriate choice for age categories, while “up and down” and “similer” do not express the data accurately or formally. There are also spelling errors in “begining,” “ration,” and “similer.” Build a small range of chart language, such as “participation rate,” “rose,” “declined,” “peaked,” and “was higher than,” and use the age-group labels from the chart. Check spelling carefully before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts a longer sentence with “while” and uses simple statements to report further observations. However, the sentence structures are not controlled well enough to make the comparisons clear. In “the male proportion is higher than the male proportion,” the comparison is grammatically formed but does not identify the intended second group. “In the last period the percentage are similer” also has a subject–verb agreement problem: “percentage” requires “is,” or the sentence should refer to plural “percentages.” The sentence beginning “Overall” is awkwardly constructed and does not clearly connect its clauses. Use straightforward comparative patterns, such as “Men’s rate was higher than women’s in the youngest group,” and check agreement and punctuation.
