IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar compares the distribution of men and women among different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010. This is measured in percentage.

Overall, female in all age groups did more daily excercise than men, except women aged 15-24. Although men and women aged 65 and above showed a slight difference, those aged 25 to 34 represented key difference between men and women.

Men and women whose age were between 15 to 24 accounted for 52.8% and 47.7%, respectively. Followed by those aged 25 to 34, with 42.2% male and 48.9 female. Aged 35 to 44, 39.5% of men and 52.5% female did regular excersice. Men and women aged 45 to 54 accounted for 43.1% and 53.3%, respectively. Likewise, male and female aged 55 to 64 accounted for 45.1% and 53%, respectively. However, those aged 65 and over showed slight difference, at 46.7% for men and 47.1% for women.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You include an introduction, an overview and figures for all six age groups, and most reported percentages match the chart. However, the overview contains a major factual error: women were more active than men in every group except 15–24, not the reverse. The claim that ages 25–34 showed the key difference is also inaccurate; the largest gap is among 35–44-year-olds. The overview should instead highlight the overall gender pattern and the contrasting age trends. The response is 141 words, below the 150-word minimum; the 10 words copied from the prompt are not counted. These inaccuracies and the limited development of the main features mean the task is only partially addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and a paragraph reporting the age-group figures. The sequence of age groups is logical, and words such as “Overall,” “Followed by,” and “However” attempt to guide the reader. However, progression is limited because the body mainly lists figures rather than grouping or comparing the trends. Some linking is awkward or unclear: “Followed by those aged 25 to 34” is a fragment, while “Likewise” does not clearly express the relationship between the two groups. The overview’s inaccurate comparison also disrupts the connection between the summary and the data. Organise the body around the contrasting male and female patterns, and use linking phrases that precisely show comparison.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing a chart, including “accounted for,” “respectively,” “slight difference,” and “age groups.” This gives you enough language to communicate the figures, but the range is limited and some choices are inaccurate or repetitive. “Distribution” is not the clearest description of percentages doing physical activity, and “daily exercise” changes the chart’s meaning because it reports regular activity, not necessarily daily activity. There are also spelling errors in “excercise” and “excersice,” and “key difference” is vague. Choose precise chart language and check spelling carefully; alternatives such as “participation rate” and “the widest gender gap” would make comparisons clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including the introductory clause “who did regular physical activity” and comparisons using “Although” and “However.” Nevertheless, errors occur frequently, and some sentences are incomplete or awkwardly formed. “This is measured in percentage” has an incorrect article and number, while “female in all age groups did” has a subject–verb agreement problem. “Followed by those aged 25 to 34” is a sentence fragment, and “Men and women whose age were between 15 to 24” has errors in agreement and the age-range construction. Use complete sentences with consistent plural subjects, and check articles and verb forms. Greater control of these basic patterns would make the data easier to follow.
