IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The bar chart illustrates the proportion of Australian citizens including males and females in different age groups who did continuously physical tasks in 2010.

Overall, the percentage of men who did physical tasks at the early stages of their life decreases with the passage of time on the other hand, the proportion of women who did continuously exercice increased.

From the age of 15 to 24, percentage of men was higher by 5 percent than women which indicates that at the early stages of life, men continuously focus on their physical activities, but after this age males showed gradual decline in their physical activities.

furthermore, from age of 25 to 64 females showed significant increase in physical works which means that when women passes the age of 24, they do regular physical works. When they got older, both gender presents the same proportion of regular physical tasks which shows that they were serious about their health.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the chart’s subject and include an overall comparison between men and women, which gives the response a relevant foundation. However, the overview is not fully accurate: men’s activity does not simply decline over time, as it rises again after reaching its low point among 35–44-year-olds. Women’s rate also does not keep increasing throughout; it peaks at 45–54 and then falls. The claim that both genders had the same proportion in the oldest group is incorrect: the figures are 46.7% for men and 47.1% for women. To make the key features clearer and better supported, report the main turning points and compare the sexes across the age groups more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overall statement and further comparisons. Linking expressions such as “Overall” and “Furthermore” help signal the direction of the discussion. However, the progression is sometimes weakened by unclear or mechanically connected ideas. For example, the long overview sentence joins contrasting trends with “on the other hand” without clear punctuation, and the final sentence moves from a claim of equal proportions to an interpretation about health. Paragraphing and clearer separation of the overview from specific comparisons would make the organisation easier to follow. Use linking words to show accurate relationships, and make sure each comparison follows logically from the figures.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary, including “proportion,” “percentage,” “age groups,” and “gradual decline,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited by repeated use of “physical tasks,” “physical works,” and “physical activities,” which are not natural descriptions of the chart’s measure. “Continuously exercice” is also an inaccurate and misspelled phrase, while “significant increase” overstates the pattern because the female figures change only modestly across several groups. Aim for precise chart language such as “regular physical activity,” “participation rate,” “rose,” “fell,” and “peaked.” More accurate collocations and less repetition would make the comparisons clearer and more appropriate for an academic report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast in “From the age of 15 to 24 … which indicates that…”. However, some sentence structures and grammatical forms are inaccurate, and these sometimes make relationships harder to follow. For example, “the proportion of women … increased” needs a clearer time reference, while “when women passes the age of 24” has a subject–verb agreement error. The sentence beginning “Overall” also needs punctuation to separate its contrasting clauses. Review articles and prepositions in phrases such as “from age of 25 to 64,” and check agreement and sentence boundaries. Greater control of these patterns would make your comparisons more precise.
