IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart illustrates the percentage of Australian men and women doing regular physical activity in 2010.
Overall, the percentage of women doing the regular physical activity is above 47, whereas, the percentage of men doing regular physical activity has dropped below 40. The highest percentage of women is in the age of 45 to 54 which is 53.3. However, the lowest percentage of men is in the age group of 35 to 44. The women are most attracted to the physical activity due to maintenance of their health and body shape. The major point about the women's percentage of doing the regular physical activity is that the percentage has not dropped below 47.
Conversely, the men's percentage in age of 15 to 24 is 52.8 and that of women is 47.7 in the same age. The percentage of men decreases from age of 25 to 34 and from 35 to 44. Then, it suddenly increases in the age group of 45 to 54 till onwards.
The Women doing the regular physical activity have maintained a consistent percentage across all ages. From the age of 65 onwards there is only a slight change in men's percentage and women's percentage. The percentage of women doing the regular physical activity is greater than that of men.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify several important features, including the female peak of 53.3% among 45–54-year-olds, the male low among 35–44-year-olds, and the early decline followed by a rise in male activity. However, some key comparisons are inaccurate or unclear: men’s activity falls to 39.5%, not below 40 throughout, and women’s figures are not consistently above men’s because men lead in the 15–24 group. The claim that women are “most attracted” to exercise for health and body shape is unsupported by the chart and should be omitted. Your overview also says women’s rates are consistent, but they vary from 47.1% to 53.3%. A more precise overview of the contrasting trends and where the sexes’ rates cross would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details about men and women, and connectors such as “Conversely” and “Then” help signal comparisons and sequence. However, the progression is not consistently clear because some points are repeated: the female rate being above 47 and greater than men is stated more than once. The overview also mixes chart observations with an unsupported explanation about women’s motivations, interrupting the focus. Phrases such as “from age of 25 to 34 and from 35 to 44” make the sequence harder to follow. Grouping the main trends into a clear overview, followed by one paragraph comparing age-group figures, would make the organisation more effective.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “age group,” “decreases,” and “increases,” so the main information is generally understandable. However, several expressions are repetitive or imprecise, particularly repeated uses of “doing regular physical activity” and “percentage.” Some collocations are unnatural, such as “most attracted to the physical activity” and “maintained a consistent percentage”; the latter also overstates how stable the figures are. More precise reporting verbs and comparison language would help describe the data accurately and flexibly. For example, use “participation rate” where appropriate and describe women’s figures as fluctuating within a relatively narrow range rather than remaining consistent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including comparisons with “whereas” and a sequence introduced by “Then.” Most sentences communicate the intended point, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “the percentage of women doing the regular physical activity is above 47” has awkward article use, while “The highest percentage of women is in the age of 45 to 54” uses an unnatural grammatical pattern. In “From the age of 65 onwards there is only a slight change in men's percentage and women's percentage,” the reference and number agreement are unclear. Practise concise comparative structures, such as “Women’s rate peaked at 53.3% among 45–54-year-olds,” and check articles, possessives, and sentence punctuation.
