IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart illustrates comparison percentages of regular physical activity among males and females of various age groups in 2010.
Overall, physical activity among the middle group was more in females as compare to males while during early age men were more active as for women. However, at the extreme of age both were approximately equal in activities.
From 35 to 64 years, females physical activity was consistent that was around 53% while males were around 40%. However, at age 15 to 24. men activities were near to 53% that decline to almost 42% while women were round about 48% and remain consistent in their 25 to 34 years of age. In addition, at age 65 and above both had physical activities around 47%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main contrast: women recorded higher activity across most adult age groups, while men led among 15–24-year-olds, and the figures were close among the oldest group. The figures you cite are broadly accurate, including about 53% for young men and around 47% for both sexes aged 65 and over. However, the overview is imprecise: “the middle group” and “extreme of age” do not clearly identify the age ranges, and the claim that women were consistent from 35 to 64 overlooks the small variation from 52.5% to 53.3%. The response also omits the important male low point at 35–44 and the subsequent rise. It is 124 words, below the required 150, so the report is underdeveloped; add a fuller comparison of the trends and key figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph with supporting figures. This gives the reader a basic route through the information, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “In addition” help signal relationships. At times, though, the progression is not fully clear. The overview uses vague references such as “the middle group” and “the extreme of age,” while the final paragraph moves between age groups without a consistent sequence. Some linking is also mechanical, with “However” used repeatedly for contrasts that could be expressed more directly. Organise the details in age order or by male/female trends, and use precise references so comparisons are easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing a chart, including “illustrates,” “decline,” “consistent,” and “approximately,” and the reader can generally understand the comparisons. However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “illustrates comparison percentages,” “physical activity among the middle group was more,” and “women were round about 48%.” Repetition of “activities” also limits variety, and “extreme of age” is not a natural way to describe the youngest and oldest groups. Aim for standard chart language such as “the proportion,” “participation,” “stood at,” and “fell to.” More precise vocabulary would make the report clearer and more fluent without requiring unnecessarily complex terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a contrast introduced by “while” and a clause beginning “that decline to almost 42%.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “females physical activity” needs a possessive form or a different construction, and “as compare to males” has an incorrect verb form. In “men activities were near to 53% that decline,” the sentence structure and verb agreement are faulty; the age-group phrase “at age 15 to 24” is also not well formed. Punctuation is inconsistent, including the full stop after “24.” Use complete, controlled comparisons—for example, “Among 15–24-year-olds, the male figure was 52.8%, compared with 47.7% for females”—and check possessives, verb forms, and sentence boundaries.
