IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar chart represents the percentage of Australian men and women that regularly engage in physical activity. There spanned out in different age categories to better monitor the trends according to people's age.

Firstly, the thing that we could deduce from this bar chart is that the younger spectrum of men aged 15 to 24 are more active and are more drawn towards regular physical activity in comparison to women of the same age category. The trend after that shows a different picture altogether where we could consistently make out that men are no where near as regular doing physical activity on a daily basis.

Women on the other hand are far more active through out the rest of the age groups. We could all see that the difference then almost disappears in the age group of 65 and over where both genders more or less have the same percentage of people physically active on a regular basis.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response provides a general overview of the data but fails to include specific data points or figures. Task 1 requires the selection and reporting of main features, which necessitates referencing the actual percentages shown in the chart. By omitting all numerical data, the response remains too vague to fully satisfy the requirements of the task. While the trends are identified, the lack of supporting evidence prevents a higher score. To improve, you must incorporate specific data points (e.g., 'approximately 45% of men') to substantiate your observations and make meaningful comparisons between the age groups.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and the progression of ideas is generally clear. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'on the other hand', and 'in comparison to', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more precise. For example, the phrase 'the thing that we could deduce' is informal and wordy. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the flow and coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and academic tone required for a high score. Phrases like 'there spanned out' and 'the thing that we could deduce' are informal and imprecise. You rely on somewhat repetitive phrasing, such as 'regular physical activity' and 'age groups'. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more sophisticated vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuate', 'proportion', 'peak', or 'marginal difference'. Additionally, ensure that your word choices are accurate and appropriate for a formal report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'There spanned out' (which is grammatically incorrect) and 'no where near as regular doing' (which should be 'nowhere near as regular in doing'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the sentence structure could be more varied to demonstrate greater control. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and avoiding informal phrasing will help improve the accuracy and sophistication of your grammatical range.
