Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response attempts to summarize the data but fails to provide a clear overview or identify significant trends. The information is presented as a list of data points for each age group rather than a coherent summary. Furthermore, the final sentence contains a factual error, as the data shows that women participated in physical activity more than men in most age groups, contradicting the student's conclusion. The response lacks a clear structure and fails to highlight the main features or make meaningful comparisons, which is essential for a Band 6 or higher. The report is largely descriptive and lacks analytical depth.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response lacks paragraphing, which makes it difficult to follow. There is no clear logical progression; the text reads like a series of disconnected sentences rather than a cohesive report. Cohesive devices are almost entirely absent, and the referencing is repetitive and mechanical (e.g., 'In the third graph', 'In the forth graph'). The lack of transition words or logical connectors between the data points hinders the flow of information. To improve, the student should group related information and use linking words to connect ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is very limited and repetitive. The student relies heavily on basic phrases like 'the percentage of' and 'in this age'. There is no attempt to use a range of vocabulary to describe trends or comparisons (e.g., 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', 'surpassed'). Some word choices are awkward, such as 'in this session' and 'the providing information'. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey basic data points but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and awkward sentence structures. For example, 'the age 15to 24' should be 'in the 15 to 24 age group'. There are also issues with sentence boundaries, as many sentences are fragmented or run-on. The range of structures is very limited, consisting mostly of simple, repetitive clauses. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and punctuation significantly impacts the quality of the writing.
