Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the chart, such as the highest and lowest participation rates. However, the analysis is somewhat inconsistent and lacks clarity in comparing the data points. For instance, the statement that the 'least active age group was 35 to 44' is not clearly supported by the data, and the description of trends is confusing, particularly regarding the 65+ age group. While the overview attempts to summarize the main trends, the lack of precision in reporting figures and the slightly inaccurate interpretation of the data prevent this from reaching a higher band. To improve, ensure that data points are accurately transcribed and that comparisons between genders are more explicitly linked to the specific age brackets provided in the chart.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. Phrases like 'To begin with' and 'In contrast' are used, but the logical flow between sentences is frequently interrupted by awkward phrasing and unclear referencing. For example, the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is abrupt. The progression of ideas is sometimes difficult to follow because the relationship between the age groups and the percentages is not clearly articulated. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would significantly enhance the coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety expected at higher levels. There is some repetition of terms like 'proportion', 'ratio', and 'age group'. Some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'male candidates doing workout' or 'female following the daily workout routine'. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of sophisticated collocations and the occasional misuse of terminology (e.g., 'ratio' instead of 'percentage') limit the score. To improve, focus on using a wider range of synonyms for 'percentage' and 'physical activity' and ensure that terms are used in their correct context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'woman at the age of 25 to 65 were'), missing articles, and awkward sentence construction (e.g., 'female following the daily workout routine over all ages were increase'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary spaces before commas and periods. While the meaning is usually understandable, the frequency of these errors suggests a lack of control over complex structures. Focusing on basic sentence accuracy and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would be a beneficial next step.
