Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the task by summarizing the main features of the bar chart. However, the approach is overly mechanical, listing data for each age group rather than synthesizing the information to highlight key trends or significant comparisons. While the main features are identified, the lack of analytical grouping makes it difficult to see the 'big picture'. The final summary statement is vague and inaccurate, as the data does not support the conclusion that 'girls' (women) led in all categories, as men had higher participation in the 15-24 age group. To improve, focus on identifying broader trends, such as which age groups were most active for each gender, rather than listing every individual data point.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into paragraphs, but the structure is repetitive and lacks logical flow. Each paragraph simply lists data points, which creates a mechanical feel. Cohesive devices are largely absent; the text relies on simple sentence structures and lists rather than linking ideas together to show relationships or contrasts. For example, there is no transition between the description of men and women, and the overall summary at the end is disconnected from the preceding paragraphs. Using cohesive devices like 'in contrast,' 'whereas,' or 'conversely' would significantly improve the flow and logical progression of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. The phrase 'did the following physical activity' is used twice, and the word 'activity' is repeated frequently throughout the text. There is little attempt to use a range of vocabulary to describe trends or data (e.g., 'fluctuated,' 'peaked,' 'remained stable,' or 'surpassed'). The student also struggles with basic terminology, such as labeling the age groups incorrectly (e.g., '55 to 645' and '55 to 54%'). To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise verbs and nouns related to data analysis and avoid repeating the same phrases.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement and incorrect placement of percentage signs (e.g., '35-44% did 39%'). The sentence structure is very basic, consisting mostly of simple sentences that list data. There is a lack of complex sentence structures, which limits the range. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the formatting of age ranges and percentages. To improve, focus on using a variety of sentence types, such as complex sentences with subordinate clauses, and ensure that data is presented clearly and accurately without redundant symbols.
