Student answer (Band 7.0)
The bar chart illustrates the proportion of different age group males and females in Australia opting for frequent physical exercise in 2010.
Overall, the highest regular workout was reported by males as compared to females at ages between 15 and 24. However, a similar pattern of physical activity was seen in both age groups of 65 and above. In addition, men of ages 35 to 44 had the lowest proportion of exercise as compared to the rest of the male age category, while females of age 45 to 54 did the largest proportion of physical activity.
53.3% of women were busy doing exercise at the age of 45 to 54, whereas men were only 43.1%. Furthermore, at the age of 65 and above, almost the same number of both genders were consistent in working out. Age group between 35 and 44: the smallest number of males had physical activity in their lives, with 39.5%, but women had the largest as compared to men 52.5%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response covers the main features of the chart well. You have successfully identified the key trends, such as the high participation in the 15-24 age group and the parity seen in the 65+ category. You also made relevant comparisons between genders. However, the report could be improved by including a more comprehensive overview of the data. While you mentioned some specific figures, ensure that all key trends are clearly highlighted in the introduction or overview paragraph. The data selection is generally accurate, and you have addressed all parts of the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized into three paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and a body paragraph containing specific data. The progression of ideas is clear. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'In addition', and 'Furthermore' to link your points. To reach a higher band, try to vary your cohesive devices further and ensure that the transition between the overview and the specific data is smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the information is presented in a way that is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'consistent', and 'category'. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'busy doing exercise' and 'largest proportion of physical activity', which sound slightly unnatural. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations related to statistics and health. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the sophistication and flexibility required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'the highest regular workout was reported by males' (a workout is an activity, not a percentage) and 'men were only 43.1%' (you should refer to the percentage of men). Punctuation is generally fine, but some phrasing is slightly awkward. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on ensuring that your subjects and verbs agree logically with the data being described.
