Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given bar graph compares the data regarding regular physical activities done by different age groups of males and females in the year 2010. The overall trend illustrates that women had participated more as compared to men in all the age groups except the age group of teenagers and adults. Additionally the age group of 65 and above had witnessed almost equal percentage of participants from both the age groups.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the bar chart, including the overall trend and specific data points. You successfully identified the general pattern of female participation being higher in most age groups. However, the summary of the data is slightly confusing in places; for instance, stating that women participated more 'except the age group of teenagers and adults' is vague, as 'adults' is a broad category. Additionally, the description of the data for specific age groups is somewhat repetitive and lacks a clear comparative structure. To reach a higher band, ensure that the data selected is grouped more logically to highlight the most significant trends rather than listing individual percentages.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into two paragraphs, which is appropriate for a short report. There is a logical progression from the overview to the specific details. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Furthermore', and 'However' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by repetitive sentence structures and some awkward phrasing, such as 'Men showed slightly equal contribution'. The referencing is generally clear, but the connection between the overview and the body paragraph could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence builds clearly on the previous one would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey the information, using terms like 'illustrates', 'depicted', and 'participation'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'slightly equal contribution' is not a natural collocation, and 'witnessed almost equal percentage' is slightly imprecise. You tend to repeat the word 'contribution' and 'age group' frequently. To improve, try to use more precise synonyms for 'participation' (e.g., 'engagement', 'involvement') and vary your descriptive language to avoid repetitive phrasing. The vocabulary is sufficient for the task but lacks the flexibility required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the age group of teenagers and adults' (which is not clearly defined in the chart) and 'least participation in of 25 to 34'. There are also minor issues with preposition usage and article placement. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your complex sentences are constructed accurately without unnecessary prepositions.
