Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The bar chart compares the proportions of Australian males and females across six age groups who engaged in regular physical activity in 2010.
Overall, women recorded higher participation rates than men in every age group except the youngest cohort. While female activity levels remained relatively stable at around 50%, the figures for men fluctuated considerably, reaching a low point among those aged 35 to 44 before rising again in the older age groups.
In the 15–24 age category, men were more physically active than women, with participation rates of 52.8% and 47.7% respectively. However, this pattern reversed in the 25–34 group, where 48.9% of women exercised regularly compared with only 42.2% of men.
The gender gap widened further among middle-aged Australians. Female participation

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the task achievement score. While the introduction and overview are clear and identify key trends, the response is incomplete, cutting off abruptly in the final paragraph. Because the analysis of the data is unfinished, the task is only partially addressed. To improve, you must ensure you complete the summary of all data points and provide a full analysis of the remaining age groups. The current length prevents a full development of the main features, which is essential for a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, a concise overview, and a body paragraph that begins to group data effectively. Cohesive devices such as 'While', 'However', and 'respectively' are used appropriately to link ideas and contrast information. Paragraphing is used correctly to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. However, because the text is incomplete, the overall progression is interrupted. To achieve a higher score, ensure that your writing is fully developed and that you use a wider range of cohesive devices to connect your sentences and paragraphs more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
The vocabulary used is accurate and appropriate for an academic report. You demonstrate a good range of topic-specific language, such as 'proportions', 'cohort', 'participation rates', and 'fluctuated'. The use of 'respectively' and 'reversed' shows a good grasp of how to present comparative data. There are no significant errors in word choice or spelling. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms or collocations to describe trends, such as 'marginal increase' or 'pronounced disparity', to show greater lexical flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The grammar is generally accurate, and you have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. For example, the sentence 'While female activity levels remained relatively stable at around 50%, the figures for men fluctuated considerably' is well-constructed and error-free. Punctuation is used correctly throughout the text. There are no major grammatical errors that impede communication. To improve, aim to include a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice constructions or conditional clauses, to demonstrate a more sophisticated command of English grammar.
