Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given bar chart delineates the information about the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010. It's crystal clear from the bar chart that age group of 15-24 of men did highest physical activity whereas in women age group of 45-54 did that.
To begin with, in the year 2010 it can be observed that men with least age had the highest percentage of physical activity. Also their is small decline in physical activity of age group 25-34 and 35-44 compared to 15-24. Age group of 35-44 had the least 39.5% of physical activity whereas 52.8% is of 15-24 age group. Moreover, age groups of 45-54, 55-64 and 65 and over show the upside trend in terms of physical activity.
Secondly, their is opposite trend in women as the 15-24 age group show nearby least percentage of physical activity. In women the bar chart contrast to the men. In addition to that, here age group of 25 -34 , 35-44, 45-54 and 55-64 show much higher percentage then to men. Futhermore, age group of 45-54 show highest percenatge of physical activity whereas 65 and over had the least percentage.
Overall, it can be observed from the bar chart that the trend in men and women is completly opposite as in women percentage increased with age group whereas in men their was not a particular pattern like women.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response provides a clear overview and identifies key trends, such as the contrast between male and female participation patterns. However, the report lacks precision in data reporting. For instance, stating that the 15-24 age group for men had the 'highest' activity is accurate, but the description of the trends for other age groups is somewhat vague. The comparison between genders is attempted, but the analysis of specific data points could be more systematic. To improve, ensure that all key features are supported by accurate figures from the chart, and avoid generalizations like 'not a particular pattern' when the data clearly shows fluctuations.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'Secondly' are used to transition between ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is slightly disjointed, particularly in the transition between the description of men and women. Referencing is generally clear, but the paragraphing could be more effectively used to group related data points to enhance the overall progression of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to describe trends and comparisons. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'delineates' and 'upside trend', though the latter is slightly unnatural. There are also recurring errors in word choice, such as 'nearby least' instead of 'near the lowest' and 'then to men' instead of 'than for men'. While these errors do not impede communication, they limit the range and precision of the language used.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, particularly with articles ('the age group of 15-24'), subject-verb agreement ('their is small decline'), and confusion between 'their' and 'there'. Additionally, there are issues with preposition usage and comparative structures ('higher percentage then to men'). While the meaning remains clear, these persistent errors indicate a lack of control over more complex grammatical forms, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band.
