Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers all age groups and provides data for both genders, which is a positive start. However, the report lacks an overview or summary of the main trends, which is a crucial requirement for Task 1. The response is essentially a list of data points for each age group rather than a synthesis of the information. To improve, you should identify the overall patterns, such as the fact that women generally participated in more physical activity than men in most age groups, and highlight the most significant differences or similarities. The current approach is too mechanical and lacks the analytical perspective required for a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is written as a single paragraph, which makes it difficult to follow. There is no clear logical progression or paragraphing to separate the introduction, body, and conclusion. While some cohesive devices like 'Firstly' and 'At the last' are used, they are somewhat mechanical and do not effectively link the ideas. The lack of paragraphing significantly impacts the readability of the report. To improve, you should structure your response into clear paragraphs: an introduction, an overview of the main trends, and body paragraphs that group information logically, perhaps by comparing trends across age groups rather than listing them one by one.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. You frequently use the same verbs, such as 'increase' and 'decrease', often with incorrect grammatical forms (e.g., 'was increase' instead of 'increased'). There is little attempt to use a range of vocabulary to describe trends or comparisons. To improve, you should learn synonyms for 'increase' (e.g., 'rose', 'climbed', 'grew') and 'decrease' (e.g., 'fell', 'dropped', 'declined'). Additionally, ensure you use the correct word forms, such as using nouns and verbs appropriately in context. Expanding your range of descriptive language will help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede communication. Examples include 'This graph show us' (should be 'shows'), 'the mans physical activity' (should be 'men's'), and 'was increase' (should be 'increased'). The sentence structures are simple and often repetitive, lacking the variety of complex structures expected at higher levels. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and pluralization. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring correct verb tenses, and practicing the use of possessives. Proofreading your work for these common errors will significantly improve the clarity and accuracy of your writing.
