IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates the proportion of Australian males and females of various age groups who perform daily exercise in 2010.

Overall, the highest percentage of females had physical activity of different age groups as compared to males. The age group of 65 and above had an almost similar ratio of daily fitness activities, while only one age group of men between 15 and 24 had a higher ratio of daily exercise activity than females.

By comparing a male with a female, one specific male group of 15 to 24-year-olds showed the highest percentage of physical activities at 52.8%, whereas females had 47.7%. Women aged 45 to 54 had the greatest ratio of activity at 53.3%, while males had 43.1%.

65 and over aged, both genders recorded a similar ratio with a negligible difference in physical activities at 47.1% and 46.7%, respectively. The smallest percentage of males aged 35 to 44 were involved in any fitness activities, but females had the greatest account of activity at 52.5%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the chart well. You successfully identified the key trends, such as the 15-24 age group being the only one where men outperformed women, and the similarity in the 65+ category. However, the overview is slightly inaccurate; you stated that the 'highest percentage of females had physical activity... as compared to males,' which is a broad generalization that ignores the specific data points where males were higher. To reach a higher band, ensure the overview captures the most significant trends without making sweeping statements that are contradicted by the data. You have selected relevant data points to support your descriptions effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on specific data comparisons. The progression of ideas is generally clear. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'whereas' and 'while,' to link comparisons. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For example, the phrase '65 and over aged' is grammatically awkward and disrupts the flow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion,' 'ratio,' and 'negligible difference.' However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice and awkward phrasing, such as 'greatest account of activity' and 'perform daily exercise' (the prompt refers to 'regular physical activity,' not necessarily 'daily'). Additionally, '65 and over aged' is not standard English. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations related to data reporting, such as 'a significant proportion' or 'a marginal difference,' and ensure that your terminology accurately reflects the data provided in the prompt.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'only one age group of men between 15 and 24 had a higher ratio... than females' (which should compare the ratio of men to the ratio of women) and '65 and over aged' (which is syntactically incorrect). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that comparisons are made between equivalent entities (e.g., comparing percentages to percentages, not groups to groups).
