The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar chart illustrates the proportions of Australian men and women across six different age brackets who engaged in regular physical activity in the year 2010.

Overall, women were generally more physically active than men in most age categories, with the single exception of the youngest group. Additionally, male participation peaked in early adulthood and declined thereafter, whereas female engagement showed a more steady upward trend until middle age before dropping slightly.

Looking first at female participation, 47.7% of women aged 15 to 24 exercised regularly. This figure rose consistently across the next three age cohorts, peaking at 53.3% among 45 to 54 year olds. After this peak, the percentage of active women dropped marginally to 53% in the 55-64 group and further decreased to 47.1% for those aged 65 and older.

In contrast, men recorded their highest activity level in the youngest category at 52.8 % , which was roughly 5% higher than their female counterparts. However, male participation rates dropped noticeably in subsequent cohorts, bottoming out at 39.5% in the 35-44 age bracket. From age 45 onwards, the figures for men began a gradual recovery, rising to 45.1% in the 55 -64 range and finally reaching 46.7% in the oldest group, nearly achieving parity with women.
