Student answer (Band 7.5)
The bar chart illustrates the percentages of Australian men and women in six different age groups who took part in regular physical activity in 2010.
Overall, women were more physically active than men in all age groups except those aged 15 to 24. In addition, the percentage of men decreased during early and middle adulthood before rising again in the older age groups, whereas the figure for women remained relatively stable throughout the period.
Among people aged 15 to 24, men had the highest participation rate at 52.8%, compared with 47.7% for women. However, in the 25 to 34 age group, the figure for men dropped to 42.2%, while the percentage for women increased to 48.9%. The biggest difference was seen among those aged 35 to 44, where 52.5% of women exercised regularly compared with only 39.5% of men.
In the remaining age groups, women continued to record higher participation rates than men. Among those aged 45 to 54, the figures were 53.3% for women and 43.1% for men. Similarly, in the 55 to 64 age group, 53% of women exercised regularly, compared with 45.1% of men. Finally, among people aged 65 and over, the figures were 47.1% for women and 46.7% for men, meaning the difference between the two genders was very small.
