Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Overall, the male and female working groups followed completely different trajectories; the former decelerated significantly, whereas the latter fluctuated significantly with the age groups.

In male, the 15 to 24 age group recorded the most significant figures, surged by just over 50%. This upward momentum is steadily weakened over the subsequent age groups, with the rate having exactly to 39.5 % for the 35 to 44 age group. After that the % exhibited an upward tend with the age group, nearly with 43.1 %, 45.1% , and 46.7 % for 45 to 54, 55 to 64, and 65 and other, respectively. In the stark contrast, the 15 to 24 female age group started with the lowest percentage at a modest 47.1 %. From that point onward the age groups experienced a rapid unbroken trend peaked at 53.3 % for 45 to 54 age group, which is bar far the highest percentage in the physical activity among men and women. Following that the % started declining with 53 % , and 47.1 % for 55 to 64 and 65 and over age group, respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all age groups and made relevant comparisons between genders. However, there are some inaccuracies in your data reporting; for instance, you state the 15-24 male group 'surged by just over 50%', but the chart shows it at approximately 52-53%. Additionally, the phrase '65 and other' is an inaccurate reading of the label '65 and over'. While the main trends are captured, more precision in data extraction would elevate the score. The overview is effective in highlighting the contrasting trajectories of men and women.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'In male', 'After that', and 'In the stark contrast' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'In male' (should be 'For men') and 'In the stark contrast' (should be 'In stark contrast'). Paragraphing is appropriate, and there is a clear progression of ideas throughout the report. To improve, ensure that cohesive devices are used more naturally to link sentences and clauses.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'trajectories', 'decelerated', 'fluctuated', and 'momentum'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'the rate having exactly to 39.5%' and 'upward tend' (likely a typo for 'trend'). The phrase 'is bar far' is also a collocation error. While you attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, the inaccuracies occasionally hinder the flow. Focusing on correct collocations and proofreading for typos will help improve your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'In male' (preposition error), 'the rate having exactly to 39.5 %' (awkward verb structure), and 'nearly with 43.1 %' (incorrect preposition usage). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around percentage signs. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, they are frequent enough to impact the overall accuracy. Increasing your control over basic sentence construction and prepositional phrases will be beneficial.
