Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart illustrates the proportion of men and women of different age groups doing physical activity in Australia in 2010.
Overall, Australian females had a higher proportion of doing physical activities in comparison to males except only 15 to 24 age group. Older males and females were accounted for nearly identical percentage.
In age group 15 to 24, men were accounted for 52.8%, while women had 47.7%. It was the only age group in which men had more participation than women. However, males represented 7% less figure than females in regular physical activity in 25–34 age group. Moreover, 35–44 age group consisted major difference of percentage between male and female, of 13%.
Furthermore, in 45–54 and 55–64, both showed negligible difference between the ratios of men and women doing regular physical activity to each other age group. In addition, people aged 65 and above of both genders depicted nearly identical values.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response provides a clear overview and selects key features to report. You successfully identified the main trend (females generally participating more) and highlighted the exception in the 15–24 age group. However, the report lacks precision in data presentation. For instance, stating that the 35–44 age group consisted of a 'major difference of 13%' is slightly vague, and the description of the 45–64 age groups as having 'negligible difference' could be improved by citing the actual figures to support the comparison. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are backed by specific data points from the chart.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'However', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader. While the progression of ideas is generally clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the information is grouped logically by age categories. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices further and ensure that the links between sentences are more fluid rather than relying on standard transition words at the start of every sentence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'participation', and 'depicted'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'were accounted for nearly identical percentage' and 'represented 7% less figure'. These phrases sound unnatural. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations. For example, instead of 'represented 7% less figure', you could say 'the figure for males was 7% lower than that for females'. Expanding your range of reporting verbs and comparative structures will help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Older males and females were accounted for nearly identical percentage' (passive voice misuse) and 'In age group 15 to 24' (missing article). Additionally, 'both showed negligible difference between the ratios... to each other age group' is syntactically confusing. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions to improve accuracy.
