The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The bar graph compares the proportion of Australian males and females of six different age groups who performed regular physical activities in 2010.

Overall, women of all age groups are more physically active than those of men, except for the 15-24 years old age category. Whereas in the age group of 65 years and over, almost a similar percentage of the population of both genders were involved in routine physical tasks.

At first glance, it is evident that the highest percentage of males was 52.8% which was recorded in the youngest age group of 15 to 24 years whereas the figure showed a steady decrease over the next two categories, reached to 42.2% among 25-34 years old and to a low of 39.5 % among 35 to 44 years old. Moreover, the pattern of physically active males increased gradually for the last three age groups. The proportion of 43.1 % males were of age 45 to 54 years. Additionally, the remaining two age categories had negligible variation in the percentage of men who performed regular physical tasks that was about 1.5%.

By contrast, the figure of females increased significantly for the first four age groups. Only 47.7% young females of 15 to 24 years old participated in routine physical tasks and the percentage rose to 48.9% among 25-34 years old women. Similarly, the pattern further reached 52.5% in the age group of 35-44 years. The highest proportion of physically active women was 53.3 % which was occupied by the 45-54 year old age group. Although this trend remained almost unchanged for the next age group of 55-64 years that was 53%, it got a drop of 6% in the women aged 65 and above.
