Student answer (Band 7.0)

The bar graph illustrates the proportion of Australian men and women in six different age groups who does physical routine in 2010.

Overall, women were more physically active than men in most age groups, with the exception of those aged 15-24 and 65 and over. While the proportion of active men genereally fell before rising gradually with age, the figure for women increased steadily until middle age and then declined.

Among men, the highest participation rate was recorded among 15-24 years old, at 52.8%. This figure then dropped considerably to 42.2% for those aged 25-34 and reached a low of 39.5% among 35-44 years olds. After that, the percentage increased to 43.1% in the 45-54 group and 45.1% among 55-64 year olds, before reaching 46.7% among those aged 65 and over.

The pattern for women was quite different. Their participation rate rose from 47.7% among 15-24 years old to 48.9% for the 25-34 group, followed by a further increase to 52.5% among 35-44 year olds. It peaked at 53.3% for women aged 45-54, and remaind almost unchanged at 53% among 55-64 year olds. However, the figure then fell sharply to 47.1% among those aged 65 and over. The largest gender difference occured in the 45-54 age group, where women were 10.2 percentage points more active than men.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses the task by providing a clear overview and selecting key features to describe. You have successfully identified the main trends for both genders and made relevant comparisons, such as noting the largest gender difference in the 45-54 age group. The data is accurately reported, and the structure allows for easy comparison between the two groups. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described with complete precision; for instance, the overview could be slightly more nuanced by explicitly mentioning the peak participation rates for both genders to provide a more comprehensive summary of the main features.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs dedicated to men and women respectively. Cohesive devices such as 'while', 'among', 'after that', and 'however' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different groups, and the progression of information is smooth. The referencing is clear throughout, and the logical flow between sentences is well-maintained, making the report easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a data description task, using terms like 'proportion', 'participation rate', 'recorded', and 'percentage points'. There are a few minor spelling errors, such as 'genereally' and 'remaind', and a slight misuse of 'physical routine' (which should be 'physical activity'). Despite these occasional slips, the vocabulary is sufficiently varied and precise enough to convey the information clearly. To improve, focus on proofreading for minor spelling errors and ensuring collocations are natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'who does physical routine' (should be 'who do physical activity') and '15-24 years old' (should be '15-24-year-olds'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and you show good control over punctuation and sentence construction. To reach a higher band, ensure subject-verb agreement is consistent and pay attention to the pluralization of age groups.
