IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The bar chart compares the proportions of Australian men and women across various age brackets who undertake daily physical activity.

Overall, younger men are the most active, whereas women's participation peaks in middle age. It is also evident that activity levels for both genders tend to decline in later life.

In terms of males, over half of those aged 15-24, 52.8%, reported engaging in daily exercise. This figure drops progressively with age, indicating a clear inverse relationship between age and physical activity among men.

In contrast, women exhibit a markedly different pattern. Younger women are relatively inactive, but participation rises substantially in mid-life, reaching a high of 53.3% in the 45-54 age group. Beyond this point, however, the proportion falls again in older age cohorts.

In conclusion, while men are most active when young, women are most active in middle age, and both groups become less active as they age.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and selected relevant data points to support your comparisons. The distinction between the male trend (a steady decline) and the female trend (a peak in middle age) is well-articulated. You have successfully highlighted the key features, such as the 52.8% figure for young men and the 53.3% peak for middle-aged women, which provides a solid summary of the provided bar chart. The information is accurate and the response is well-focused on the prompt requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the data, which aids readability. Cohesive devices such as 'In terms of', 'In contrast', and 'Beyond this point' are used effectively to guide the reader through the comparisons. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a task of this length. There is a clear logical flow from the general overview to the specific details of each gender.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the data with precision. Phrases such as 'proportions of Australian men and women', 'age brackets', 'inverse relationship', and 'older age cohorts' demonstrate a good command of academic language. The word choices are accurate and appropriate for a report on statistical data. While the vocabulary is functional and precise, incorporating a few more sophisticated synonyms or collocations related to trends (e.g., 'fluctuate' or 'marginal') could elevate the response further, but the current range is already quite strong.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response displays a good variety of complex structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses ('while men are most active when young, women are...') and participial phrases ('indicating a clear inverse relationship'). The grammar is highly accurate, with no significant errors that impede communication. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and the sentence structures are varied enough to maintain interest. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent, reflecting a high level of grammatical competence.
