IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The bar chart illustrates the proportion of Australian males and females in six different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Overall, women were generally more active than men in most age groups. The only age group where men were more active than women was the youngest group (15 to 24).

For men, the highest percentage of physical activity was in the 15–24 age category at 52.8%. However, this number decreased to 39.5% in the 35–44 age group, which was the lowest proportion for males. After this age, the percentage for men slowly increased, reaching 46.7% for those aged 65 and over.

In contrast, women aged 15 to 24 had the lowest activity rate among females at 47.7%. However, the percentage of active women increased in older groups, peaking at 53.3% in the 45–54 age bracket. Finally, in the 65 and over group, both genders had very similar activity rates, with 47.1% for females.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively addresses the task by summarizing the main features of the bar chart. You have successfully identified the key trends, such as the general activity levels of women compared to men and the specific age-related fluctuations. The data is accurately reported, and you have made relevant comparisons between genders and across age groups. To reach a higher band, ensure that you highlight the most significant data points more explicitly in the overview, perhaps by noting the peak activity levels for both genders more clearly. Overall, the response is well-focused and covers all requirements of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group information by gender. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast,' 'However,' and 'Finally' effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the data. The flow between sentences is natural, and there is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive linking. This demonstrates a high level of control over the structure of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information with precision. Terms such as 'proportion,' 'category,' 'bracket,' and 'activity rate' are used correctly and appropriately for an academic report. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, it remains somewhat standard. To achieve a higher score, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or varied synonyms for 'increased' and 'decreased' to show greater flexibility and precision in your descriptive language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response displays a good variety of complex structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses ('where men were more active than women') and participial phrases ('reaching 46.7% for those aged 65 and over'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense is consistent. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The writing is clear and demonstrates a solid command of English grammar, which is appropriate for this level.
