Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task and provides a clear overview of the main trends. You successfully identified the key differences between men and women across the age groups. However, the report is essentially a list of data points. To reach a higher band, you should group the data more effectively by highlighting significant similarities or differences rather than listing every percentage point. For example, instead of listing every age group for men, you could group the younger and older cohorts together to contrast them with the middle-aged groups. This would demonstrate a more analytical approach to the data.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'In short' to transition between ideas. However, the paragraphing is slightly unbalanced, and the flow between the individual data points in the body paragraphs feels somewhat mechanical. To improve, try to use more varied linking phrases and ensure that the progression of ideas feels more natural. The referencing is generally clear, but the structure of the sentences within the paragraphs could be more fluid to enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrates', 'constituted', and 'recorded'. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive, particularly the reliance on 'recorded', 'represented', and 'showed'. To achieve a higher band, you should aim for more variety in your reporting verbs and descriptive language. There are no significant spelling errors, and the vocabulary used is appropriate for the context, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score. Expanding your repertoire of synonyms for 'increase', 'decrease', and 'peak' would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'men underwent more physical activity' (a slightly unnatural collocation) and 'indicated the least percentage among all age groups was 39.5%' (which is a run-on/awkwardly structured clause). Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. To improve, focus on ensuring that your complex sentences are grammatically sound and that your subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout the report.
