Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The chart compares the proportion of Australian male and female in different age brackets performing regular physical activity in 2010.
Overall, Australian women in all age groups were more active than men in engaging in everyday physical activity, except for young adults.
The proportion of males aged 15-24 was more involved in regular physical activity than females, at 52.8% and 47.7% in the same order. This was the only age group where men were more physically active than women. The figures for Australian males who were involved in regular physical activity decreased in the 25-34 age group from 52.8% to 42.2%, while the figure for females increased by 1.2 percentage points, making it 48.9%. The percentage of Australian men in the 35-44 age bracket who carried out physical activity regularly was 39.5%, and that of females stood at 52.5%.
The percentages for men increased steadily across the age groups 45-54 and 55-64, at 43.1% and 45.1%, respectively, whereas for females, the figures were 53.3% and 53.0%, respectively. Although the figure for women decreased in the 65 and above age category, they were almost as active as men in carrying out physical activity, making up 46.7 and 47.1% in the order given.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively addresses the task by identifying the main features and making relevant comparisons. You successfully highlighted the key trend that women were generally more active, while noting the exception in the 15-24 age group. The data is accurately reported, and the summary is well-structured. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are fully developed; for instance, you could have contrasted the magnitude of the gender gap across different age groups more explicitly. Overall, the response is clear, accurate, and covers all parts of the prompt well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from an overview to specific age-group comparisons. Cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'although', and 'in the same order' are used effectively to link information. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is smooth. To improve further, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, 'in the order given' is a bit mechanical. Overall, the text is easy to follow and demonstrates a good command of cohesive structures.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'proportion of', 'age brackets', and 'percentage points' are used accurately. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some phrasing is slightly repetitive (e.g., 'regular physical activity' is used frequently). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more varied synonyms for 'activity' or 'involved' would enhance the lexical range. There are no significant errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use subordinate clauses effectively, such as 'Although the figure for women decreased...'. Most sentences are error-free, and the control of grammar is generally strong. There are minor issues with phrasing, such as 'in the same order' or 'in the order given', which are slightly awkward but do not hinder understanding. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the grammatical control is consistent throughout the response.
