IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The chart depicts the percentage of different age grouped Australian people who did regular physical activity in the year 2010.

Overall, the percentages prove that female are more physically active than male. Female aged from mid 30s to mid 60s are more active physically. Whereas the male around their teenage are the most active, which is still less than taht of the female.

Male are mostly active in their teenage to mid 20s,i.e. 52.8%, which is the highest of all. The activity level in male decreases to 39.5% at the age of 35 to 44, increasing slightly over the coming years.

Female are more active than male throughout their life. Their activity increases over the years reaching to 53.3 in 45 to 54 years. This figure almost remains constant for almost ten years, then drops at 47.1% just after that. In the last years, both have almost same percentage of activity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the chart, including the overall trend and specific age-group comparisons. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For example, the statement that females are 'more physically active than male' is a good summary, but the data points provided (e.g., '53.3 in 45 to 54 years') lack units or clear labels. The comparison between genders is present, but the description of the trends could be more precise. The conclusion regarding the final age group is vague ('almost same percentage'), which misses the opportunity to highlight specific data points. To reach a higher band, ensure all data is clearly referenced and trends are described with more analytical depth.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall', 'Whereas', and 'In the last years', which help the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, some transitions are mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'just after that' when referring to age groups. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices to link sentences more fluidly rather than relying on simple sentence starters.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe trends and percentages. There are some inaccuracies, such as 'age grouped Australian people' (should be 'age groups') and 'taht' (spelling error). The range is somewhat limited, relying on basic descriptors like 'active' and 'increases'. While the meaning is clear, there is little evidence of less common lexical items or sophisticated collocations. To improve, incorporate more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'remained stable', to demonstrate a broader range of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'female are' (should be 'females are'), 'male around their teenage' (should be 'males in their teenage years'), and 'at the age of 35 to 44'. Additionally, there are issues with article usage and pluralization. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of plural nouns when making generalizations about groups of people.
