IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 8.0)
The bar chart compares the proportion of Australian men and women across six age brackets who engaged in regular physical activity in 2010.
Overall, participation rates were fairly similar between the sexes, though the pattern reverses partway through the age range: men were more physically active than women in the two youngest groups, whereas women exceeded men across the middle age brackets, before the figures converged again among the elderly.
Among 15- to 24-year-olds, 52.8% of men engaged in regular exercise compared with 47.7% of women, and a comparable gap persisted in the 25-34 bracket, where 48.9% of men were active versus 42.2% of women — the widest disparity in the entire dataset.
This trend reversed from age 35 onwards. In the 35-44 group, women's participation rose to 52.5%, notably higher than men's 39.5%, which was the lowest figure recorded for either sex. Women continued to lead in the 45-54 and 55-64 brackets, with rates of 53.3% and 53% respectively, while men's figures remained comparatively subdued at around 43-45%.
Finally, among those aged 65 and over, the gap narrowed considerably, with 46.7% of men and 47.1% of women reporting regular activity — the closest margin observed across all age groups.
