Student answer (Band 6.5)
The bar chart compares the percentage of Australian men and women who did regular physical activity in different age groups in 2010.
Overall, women recorded higher rates of regular physical activity than men in most age groups, with the exception of one age group. Among men, the highest figure was recorded in the 15-24 age group, whereas women reached their highest level in the 45-54 age group.
An analysis of the chart reveals that males recorded the highest level of physical activity among the 15-24 age group, at 52.8%, while females recorded 47.7%. In contrast, females accounted for 48.9% in the 25-34 age group, whereas males accounted for 42.2% of the physical activity. Moreover, the figure for females was 52.5%, and for males, 39.5% in the 35-44 age group.
From the chart, it is evident that males accounted for 43.1% and 45.1% of physical activity, whilst the figure for females was 43.1% and 45.1% in the 45-54 and 55-64 age groups, respectively. Furthermore, females recorded 47.1% in the 65 and over age group, whereas females recorded 46.7% of physical activity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the data and provided a clear overview. You selected relevant data points to support your comparisons, such as the peak age groups for men and women. However, there is a significant error in the final paragraph where you state 'females recorded 47.1% in the 65 and over age group, whereas females recorded 46.7% of physical activity.' This is a factual inconsistency as you are comparing females to females rather than females to males. Additionally, the data for the 45-54 and 55-64 age groups is presented in a way that is slightly confusing due to the repetition of the same figures for both genders, which may not accurately reflect the source chart.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Moreover', and 'whilst' to link ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different age groups. However, the progression in the final paragraph is slightly hindered by the repetitive and confusing reporting of the data, which makes the comparison less clear. Overall, the flow of information is generally smooth, and the use of referencing is mostly effective, though the final sentence lacks clarity due to the error mentioned in the task achievement section.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'recorded higher rates', 'with the exception of', and 'accounted for' are used appropriately. You avoid repetitive language and maintain a formal tone suitable for an academic report. While you do not use a wide range of sophisticated or less common lexical items, the vocabulary is precise enough to communicate the data accurately. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication, though more variety in reporting verbs (e.g., 'represented', 'constituted', 'peaked at') would enhance the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There is good control over punctuation and sentence construction. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammatical structures used are appropriate for the task. For instance, the use of 'whereas' and 'while' to create complex sentences shows a good grasp of subordinating conjunctions. There are no major grammatical errors that cause difficulty for the reader. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as passive voice constructions or more varied participial phrases, to demonstrate greater flexibility.
