Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response effectively summarizes the main features of the bar chart. You have successfully identified the overall trend that women generally participated in more physical activity, while correctly highlighting the exception in the 15-24 age group. Key data points are selected and compared throughout the report, providing a clear overview of the information. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurately transcribed; for example, you mentioned '47.1' for women over 65, but the chart shows 47.7%. Additionally, ensure that your comparisons are consistently precise to fully satisfy the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by age categories. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'additionally', and 'on the other hand' to link sentences. However, the flow is occasionally slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the transition between the overview and the detailed body paragraphs is smoother. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the clarity of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly, using terms like 'proportion', 'accounted for', and 'engage'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'the portion reduced more to 39.5%' (where 'percentage' or 'figure' would be more precise) and 'the highest figure for male' (which should be 'males'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more sophisticated collocations or varied synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' would help elevate the lexical range to a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'Australian male and female' (should be 'males and females'), '15 to 24 age group was the only category, where' (unnecessary comma), and 'the female of 35 to 44 age group do' (tense inconsistency; should be 'did'). These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
