IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The bar graph illustrates the proportion of Australian men and women in various age groups who did physical activity regularly in 2010.

Overall, the proportion of women who did regular physical activity was higher than that of men in all age groups, with the 15-24 age group being the only exception. The proportion of men generally declined with age before increasing among the older age groups, while the figure for women showed the opposite trend, rising until middle age before falling in the oldest group.

For the youngest age group, 15-24, the proportion was higher for males than for females, with figures standing at 52.8% and 47.7%, respectively, making this the only age group in which the male figure was higher. However, for the 25-34 age group, the female figure rose to 48.9%, making it higher than the male figure, whereas the figure for men fell to 42.2%. The figures were 39.5% and 52.5% for male and females, respectively, in the 35-44 age group, with the male figure continued declining and female figure increasing up to this age group.

In the 45-54 age group, the male figure rose to 43.1%, still lower than the female figure of 53.3%. In the 55-64 age group, the figure stood at 45.1% and 53% for males and females, respectively. Finally, in the 65 and over age group, the proportion for males was slightly lower than that for females, at 46.7% and 47.1%, respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively addresses the task by identifying the main features and providing relevant comparisons. You successfully highlighted the overall trend where women generally participated more in physical activity, with the exception of the 15-24 age group. The data is well-selected, and you have provided specific percentages to support your observations. The overview is clear and accurately reflects the key patterns in the data. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are precise; for instance, the description of the trends in the second paragraph could be slightly more nuanced to fully capture the fluctuations across all age groups.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information effectively. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'however', and 'in contrast' to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed data analysis. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the text. To improve further, ensure that the transition between sentences remains varied to avoid a slightly repetitive structure when listing percentages.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a data description task, using terms like 'proportion', 'figure', 'declined', and 'exception'. The language is precise enough to convey the information clearly. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common synonyms to describe trends, such as 'marginal increase' or 'a significant disparity', rather than relying on simpler descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is generally good. There are minor slips, such as 'with the male figure continued declining', which should be 'continued to decline' or 'was continuing to decline'. Despite these occasional errors, the grammar does not impede understanding. To reach a higher band, aim for more consistent control over complex grammatical structures and ensure that verb forms are always correctly matched to the intended tense and voice.
