Student answer (Band 7.5)

The bar chart compares the percentages of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Overall, women were more physically active than men in almost all age groups, except for the youngest group. The percentage of active men generally increased with age, while the figure for women remained relatively stable.

Among people aged 15 to 24, 52.8% of men did regular physical activity, compared with 47.7% of women. However, in the 25–34 age group, the percentage for men fell to 42.2%, whereas the figure for women rose slightly to 48.9%. The biggest difference between men and women was seen among those aged 35–44, with 39.5% of men and 52.5% of women exercising regularly.

For the 45–54 age group, 43.1% of men were physically active, compared with 53.3% of women. Among people aged 55–64, the figures increased to 45.1% for men and 53% for women. Finally, in the oldest age group, the percentages were almost identical, at 46.7% for men and 47.1% for women.

Overall, women had higher rates of regular physical activity in most age groups, while the gap was smallest among people aged 65 and over.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and successfully selected and reported key features from the data. The comparisons between men and women are accurate and well-supported by the provided figures. You have successfully identified the main trend—that women generally participated in more physical activity—and highlighted the notable exception in the youngest age group. The information is logically grouped, and the summary is balanced, covering all age categories without unnecessary repetition. This meets the requirements for a high band score as the data is presented clearly and accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from the introduction and overview to specific age-group comparisons. You have used cohesive devices such as 'however', 'whereas', and 'finally' effectively to link ideas and contrast the data points. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the information flows smoothly from one point to the next. The use of referencing is clear, and the overall structure allows the reader to follow the comparison between the two groups without difficulty. The cohesion is managed well throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the data accurately. Phrases like 'remained relatively stable', 'biggest difference', and 'almost identical' demonstrate a good command of language appropriate for a data summary. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it is generally standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated synonyms for 'increased' or 'fell' (such as 'surged', 'dipped', or 'fluctuated') to show greater lexical flexibility. However, the current range is more than adequate for the task, and there are no errors in word choice or collocation that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses ('while the figure for women remained...') and comparative structures ('the biggest difference... was seen among...'). The grammar is highly accurate, with the majority of sentences being error-free. Punctuation is used correctly to separate clauses and list data points. There are no significant grammatical errors, and the control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout the report. The writing is fluent and demonstrates a high level of grammatical control.
