Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The bar chart illustrates the percentages of Australian men and women in six different age groupes who practiced in regular physical activity in 2010.

Overall, women were more physically active than men in almost all age groupes, expected for those aged 15 to 24. The proportion of females generally increased with age before remaining relatively stable, whereas the figure for males flactuated throughout the period. The highest rate for women was recorded among those age 45 to 54, while men had their highest figure in the youngest age group.

Among people aged 15 to 24, males had a higher partipation rate than females, at 52.8% and 47.7%, respectievly. However, this pattern was reversed in the next age group, with 48.9% of women engaging in regular physical activity compared with 42.2% of men. The difference became even more noticeable among those aged 35 to 44, where the figures were 52.5% for females and only 39.5% for males, representing the largest gender gap on the chart.

For the 45 to 54 age group the percentage of women participating in physical activity reached a peak of 53%, whereas the male figure increased slightly to 45.1%. Among those aged 55 to 64, female participation remained almost unchanged at 53%, whereas the male figure increased slightly to 45.1%. Finally, in the oldest age group, the rates for both genders were quite similar, at 47.1% for women and 46.7% for men.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively addresses the task by summarizing the main features of the bar chart. You have successfully identified the key trends, such as the gender reversal in the 15-24 age group and the peak participation rates. The comparison between genders is clear and supported by specific data points from the chart. The overview provides a good summary of the main trends. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurate; for instance, you noted that the male figure for the 55-64 age group increased, but the chart shows it remained consistent with the previous group. Overall, the response is well-structured and covers all requirements of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the data, which helps the reader follow the analysis easily. You have used a range of cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'however', and 'in contrast' to link your points effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed body paragraphs. The flow of information is smooth, and referencing is clear throughout the text. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words, which demonstrates a good level of control over the structure of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'participation rate', 'engaging in regular physical activity', and 'gender gap' are used appropriately. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'groupes' (groups), 'partipation' (participation), 'respectievly' (respectively), and 'flactuated' (fluctuated). While these do not impede communication, they are noticeable. To improve, focus on proofreading your work to catch these minor slips. The use of vocabulary is generally natural, and you have avoided repetitive phrasing, which is a positive aspect of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. You have demonstrated good control over comparative structures, such as 'The difference became even more noticeable among those aged 35 to 44'. While there are occasional errors, such as 'expected for those' (excepted for those) and minor punctuation issues, the majority of your sentences are error-free. The grammatical control is generally strong, and the errors present do not cause any difficulty for the reader. To reach a higher band, ensure that you maintain consistency in verb tenses and check for small slips in word forms.
