IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

in the bar chart we can see 6 age groups here starting from age 15 and all the way to age 65 and over.

this bar chart is about regular physical activity among men and women in the year 2010.

both genders seemed to do almost the same amount of physical activity regardless of the age group. We cannot see a very noticeable difference between the two genders in terms of their physical activity.

but, when we see the age group progression in terms of physical activity in the chart. what seems to be clearly noticeable is that women are doing more physical activity than men, especially those women from the age of 25 to 64.

that is very interesting because it clearly shows that women are more concerned about their physical activity. maybe because women think more about how they look and men don't seem to worry too much about that.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the requirements of an Academic Task 1 report. Instead of objectively summarizing the data, the student provides subjective interpretations and personal opinions, such as 'women are more concerned about their physical activity' and 'men don't seem to worry too much'. An IELTS report must remain neutral and avoid speculation. Furthermore, the response lacks a clear overview of the main trends and fails to provide specific data points (percentages) from the chart to support the descriptions. The analysis is superficial and does not effectively compare the age groups as requested.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organized into very short, fragmented paragraphs that lack logical flow. The use of cohesive devices is minimal and often repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'this bar chart' and 'in terms of'. There is no clear progression of ideas; the text reads more like a series of disjointed observations rather than a cohesive report. The transition between the description of the data and the personal commentary is abrupt and lacks appropriate linking phrases to guide the reader through the information.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive. The student relies on simple phrases like 'we can see', 'very noticeable', and 'doing more physical activity'. There is no attempt to use academic or topic-specific vocabulary related to data analysis (e.g., 'proportion', 'fluctuation', 'peak', 'trend', 'demographic'). The language is informal and conversational, which is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 report. To improve, the student needs to incorporate a wider range of precise, formal vocabulary to describe statistical trends.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The grammatical range is limited, consisting mostly of simple sentence structures. There are frequent errors in punctuation, such as starting sentences with lowercase letters and improper sentence fragmentation. While the meaning is generally understandable, the lack of complex structures and the presence of basic grammatical errors (e.g., 'both genders seemed to do almost the same amount') indicate a lack of control. The writing style is too informal, lacking the precision required for a formal report.
