IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates how the percentage of men and women of varying ages who did regular physical activity differs from each other and offers a comparison between how active different age groups are.

Overall, it is clear that women have a higher proportion of physical activity with the exception of younger men. Middle-aged men are lowest active.

Men of age 15 to 24 are usually the most physically active. The activity rate declines reaching its lowest of 39.5% shown by men aged 35 to 44. The rate gradually rises for later age groups but remains lower than the females of their age group.

Females demonstrate a general upwards trend in percentage of physical activity, reaching its peak of 53.3 for women aged 45 to 54. A slight decrease can be observed for later age groups. Another profound thing is that people aged 65 and older have almost similar physical activity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the bar chart well. You successfully identified the overall trend and highlighted key comparisons between genders and age groups, such as the peak for women aged 45-54 and the low point for men aged 35-44. To reach a higher band, ensure you include more specific data points to support your observations, as some descriptions like 'gradually rises' or 'slight decrease' could be better substantiated with the actual percentages provided in the chart. Overall, the summary is accurate and addresses all parts of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The report is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Overall', 'with the exception of', and 'Another profound thing', which help guide the reader. However, the transition between sentences could be smoother; for instance, the final sentence about the 65+ age group feels slightly disconnected from the previous paragraph. Increasing the variety of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would improve the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'declines', and 'upwards trend'. However, there are some awkward phrasings, such as 'Middle-aged men are lowest active' and 'Another profound thing', which sound unnatural. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and academic phrasing. For example, instead of 'lowest active', use 'had the lowest levels of physical activity'. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives and adverbs would also help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the percentage of men and women... differs from each other' (which should be 'differ from one another') and 'reaching its peak of 53.3 for women' (which lacks a unit or clear reference). Additionally, the sentence 'Middle-aged men are lowest active' is grammatically incorrect. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that comparisons are structured accurately will help you improve your control over complex sentence forms.
