Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given bar chart depicts the portion of Australian men and women in various age groups who did physical work in the year 2010.

Overall, the chart shows that apart from only one age group, women stayed dominant in physical activities. The age group which did highest number of physical labour are of the women aged from 56 to 64, while the lowest are of the men who age between 35 to 44. The age group between 65 and over is the only one where both gender almost remained the same.

The graph further illustrates that the age group of 15 to 24 is the one which did most of the physical activities reaching to 52.8 percent in comparison to the rest of the groups. Similarly, it stayed at its lowest for the age group of 35 to 44.

As for the women the chart shows that the age group from 45 to 54 is the one with highest percentage surging to 53.3 percent. The age group from 55 to 64 follows it and people of age 35 to 44 is the one that falls in the third category.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response provides a clear overview and identifies key trends. However, the data reporting is inconsistent and contains inaccuracies. For example, you state that the 15-24 age group had the highest participation at 52.8%, but the chart shows the 55-64 age group for women is higher (53.3%). Additionally, the description of the 35-44 age group as the lowest is accurate, but the comparison between genders is somewhat muddled. To improve, ensure that data points are transcribed precisely and that comparisons between categories are explicitly linked to the figures provided in the chart.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Similarly', and 'As for'. However, the progression of ideas is occasionally disjointed. For instance, the transition between the general overview and the specific age group analysis could be smoother. Some referencing is slightly mechanical, and the connection between the paragraphs could be strengthened by using more varied linking phrases to guide the reader through the data comparisons more effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'depicts', 'dominant', and 'surging'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'physical work' or 'physical labour' instead of 'physical activity', and 'both gender' (should be 'both genders'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band. Focusing on more academic collocations related to data description would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the age group which did highest number... are of the women' (subject-verb agreement and article usage) and 'both gender almost remained the same' (pluralisation). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles when referring to specific groups.
