IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The bar chart illustrates the percentage of Australian women and men in distinct age groups who consistently did physical activity in 2010.

Overall, percentage of female population doing regular activity was higher than that of their male counterparts across almost all age groups. However, boys between the age of 15 and 24 showed higher percentage of activity than girls in that same age group.

The percentage of women population between the age of 35 and 64 was highest because more than half of the women performed exercise at that time. They are at their lowest performance when they get older than 65 years of age. The major difference between the regularity of activities of male and female is when they are between age of 35 and 44.

In 2010 majority of men did not do any regular activity. Although, the percentage of male population doing constant activity age showed an increase from age of 35 years, their highest activity is reported when they were under 24 years of age.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have successfully identified the main trends and made relevant comparisons between the age groups. You highlighted the overall trend where women generally participated more in physical activity, while noting the exception in the 15-24 age group. However, the report lacks precision regarding the data points. For instance, you mention 'more than half of the women' for the 35-64 age group, but the chart shows specific percentages that should be cited to support your summary. Additionally, the statement that 'majority of men did not do any regular activity' is a broad generalization that could be better supported by referencing the specific figures provided in the bar chart.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on specific trends. There is a clear progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. For example, the transition 'Although, the percentage of male population...' is grammatically awkward and disrupts the flow. Referencing could also be improved; phrases like 'that same age group' are clear, but the overall structure would benefit from more varied linking words to connect the comparisons between men and women more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information, using terms like 'counterparts,' 'consistently,' and 'regularity.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'women population' should be 'female population' or 'the population of women.' The phrase 'constant activity age' is unclear and does not accurately describe the data. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise terminology when describing statistical trends, such as 'participation rates' instead of 'percentage of activity.'

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. You frequently omit necessary articles, such as 'Overall, percentage of female population' (should be 'the percentage of the female population'). There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and preposition usage, such as 'at that time' (which is vague in this context) and 'between age of 35 and 44' (missing 'the'). These errors occur throughout the text, though they do not prevent the reader from understanding your main points.
