Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by summarising the main features of the bar chart and making relevant comparisons between Australian men and women in 2010. The student correctly notes general trends, such as women having higher participation overall except in the youngest bracket, and supports these claims with precise data points like '53.3%' and '43.1%'. The overview is clearly stated at the beginning, noting that female participation was higher and highlighting the peak group for women (45-54). While there is a minor typo regarding the age range '15- 4', the overall task is addressed well and ideas are appropriately selected and reported, matching the requirements for a Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organised, beginning with a clear introduction and an overall summary before diving into specific age-group comparisons. Paragraphing is used effectively to group related data points. A variety of cohesive devices are utilised to signal contrast and progression, such as 'Overall', 'However in contrast', 'nevertheless', and 'where'. Although some sentences are quite long and run-on with repetitive referencing structures (e.g., 'where women dominated men and accounted for... where men remained...'), the progression of ideas remains generally clear throughout. This fits the description for a Band 6.5, leaning towards solid organisation with occasional mechanical cohesive links.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task, incorporating terms such as 'participation', 'proportion', 'peaked', 'dominated', and 'trend got reversed'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with some success, though there are minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation (e.g., 'trend was somewhere stable' instead of 'remained relatively stable'). Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary choices do not impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow the numerical descriptions. These qualities align well with the Band 6.0 descriptors for lexical resource.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms with relative success, using subordinate clauses introduced by relative pronouns and conjunctions (e.g., 'while', 'where', 'in comparison to'). However, there are notable grammatical errors and punctuation issues, including run-on sentences, missing full stops at the end of paragraphs, and fragmented number ranges like '15- 4'. Despite these errors, meaning is rarely impeded, and the majority of sentences convey the intended comparisons clearly. This balanced profile corresponds to a Band 6.0 for grammatical range and accuracy.
