Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all key parts of the task by identifying the main trends and making relevant comparisons between Australian men and women across different age groups. An overview is successfully provided, stating that females generally had higher participation rates except in the youngest category, and highlighting the peak for women aged 45 to 54. Key data points, such as the 52.8% for young males and the narrow difference in the 65 and over bracket, are accurately selected and reported. However, some minor details could have been integrated more smoothly, and the interpretation of the fluctuations leans slightly toward a narrative rather than a purely analytical summary. Nonetheless, all task requirements are adequately met, placing this response comfortably at band 6.5 to 7.0. Given the clear coverage of trends and comparisons, a band score of 6.5 is appropriate.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organised into four distinct paragraphs: an introduction, an overall standpoint, body details, and a brief conclusion. Information and ideas progress reasonably well from broad trends to specific age group comparisons. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'From an overall standpoint', 'In the later age groups', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally clumsy or mechanical, as seen in phrases like 'compared to later age group' and 'in the other gender'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate distinct parts of the response. Overall, the structural flow is clear enough to ensure smooth navigation through the data, supporting a solid band 6.5 score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'significantly higher', 'comparatively low', 'fluctuating', and 'considerable amount of fluctuation'. However, there are multiple spelling and word-choice errors that detract from the precision of the writing, including 'proprotion' (proportion), 'performs' (perform), 'acitvities' (activities), 'froup' (group), and 'ratio' instead of proportion or percentage. Additionally, phrases like 'more amount of females' are awkward and imprecise. While communication is never impeded, these noticeable lexical inaccuracies prevent the response from achieving a higher band. The lexical resource aligns best with band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and comparative constructions ('whereas, proportion of males remains comparatively low than females'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as the omission of articles ('The youngest age group depicts high proportion') and issues with subject-verb agreement or tense consistency ('who regularly performs physical acitvities', 'females in the age froup of 45 to 54 are significantly higher'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though comma splices and misplaced commas occur ('whereas, proprotion'). Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, allowing the grammar score to sit at a stable band 6.0.
