IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart compares the proportion of Australian men and women that performed exercise regularly by their age group.
Overall, it is clear that the number of females in the all age group often performed physical activity regularly than men, with the only exception in young people group, where men proportion surpassed the female.
In 2010, the proportion of young people in the age group 15-24 that were doing physical activity regularly was stood at 52.8%, while the figure was accounted at slightly lower in females in the same age group. Furthermore, in the adulthood group, the proportion of women surpassed the men and was recorded at 48.4%, whereas in the age group of 35-44, the male proportion declined to 39.5%, while the women figure rose to 52.5%.
However, the male with the age also showed a steadily growth in their proportion. The figure of male people in the age 54-64 that performed physical activity regularly was accounted for 45.1% and the proportion was at 53% for females. Interestingly, the people in the elderly age group both men and women showed a similar proportion with the only difference of 0.4%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response successfully covers the main features of the bar chart by comparing the proportion of Australian men and women participating in regular physical activity across different age groups. The candidate outlines the general trend that females generally participated more than males, except in the youngest age group. Key data points are selected and reported, such as the 52.8% figure for young men aged 15-24 and the statistics for older cohorts. While some specific age ranges in the prompt are misread or mislabeled in the text (such as referring to '54-64' instead of the standard chart bands), the response still fulfills the core requirements of Task 1 by providing an overview and making relevant comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and an overview statement ('Overall, it is clear that...'). Information is organized logically into paragraphs, moving from younger to older age groups. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or awkwardly deployed, such as the transition 'However, the male with the age also showed a steadily growth', which disrupts the natural flow of ideas. Paragraphing is present and generally appropriate, but referencing and linking between sentences occasionally lack precision, limiting the score to a solid band 6.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The writer attempts a reasonable range of vocabulary relevant to the visual data, including terms like 'proportion', 'surpassed', and 'decline'. However, there are notable lexical and collocational errors throughout the text, such as 'the number of females in the all age group often performed physical activity regularly than men' (awkward phrasing and incorrect comparative structure) and 'steadily growth' instead of 'steady growth'. Less common lexical items are attempted but lack precision and natural control, which restricts the band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ambition with relative clauses and subordinate structures, such as 'where men proportion surpassed the female'. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb forms and passives, including 'was stood at 52.8%', 'the figure was accounted at', and 'the male with the age also showed a steadily growth'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical errors occasionally cause strain for the reader.
