IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart compares the proportion of Australian

men and women who did physical activity regularly

in the different age group during 2010.

overall, it is clear that the proportion of women were generally higher then men in the all age group

who performed physical activity regularly, as only exception in the youngest age group, where men's proportion was higher than women.

In 2010, the men proportion in the age group 15 to 24

who engaged in regular physical activity was at 52.8%, while the figure for women recorded at 42.7%. Furthermore, in the age group 25 - 34

the women proportion was higher that of men at 48.9%.

and in the age group 35 to 44, the men proportion declined

to 39.5%, whereas the figure for women rose to 51.5%.

However, the male proportion with the age also showed

a steady growth. Their proportion was at

43.1% for 45 to 54 age group and the figure recorded at

53.3% for women in the same age group. The proportion of men in the age group of 55 to 64 who engaged in regular physical activity was at 45.1%, while the proportion of women remained relatively stable. Interestingly, the people in the elderly age group

both men and women showed a similar proportion

only with the difference of 0.4 percent points.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by identifying key features and making relevant comparisons across different age groups. The overview correctly highlights the general trend that women had higher participation rates than men, with the exception of the youngest age group. Data points are appropriately selected and reported, such as mentioning the figures for the 15 to 24 age group and the older cohorts. While there are a few minor errors in data interpretation (such as incorrectly stating the female proportion in the 25-34 bracket compared to men), the response provides a clear summary overall. This performance aligns well with Band 6.5, which is represented here at Band 6.0 due to some under-developed or imprecise reporting of specific details.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The text presents a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical progression, starting with an introductory overview and moving through sequential age categories. Paragraphing is used, though some paragraphs are quite brief or broken up awkwardly, such as the single-sentence division for the overview. Cohesive devices are used adequately, with connectors like 'Furthermore' and 'However', though referencing is sometimes slightly mechanical or unclear (e.g., 'the women proportion was higher that of men'). Overall, the logical structure is maintained throughout the response, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting words related to data description such as 'proportion', 'engaged', 'declined', and 'stable'. However, there are notable word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'the men proportion' instead of 'the proportion of men' or 'male proportion', and 'percent points' instead of 'percentage points'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but lexical control is inconsistent. These limitations place the performance solidly in the Band 6 category, as the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main ideas despite some errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in structure. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly concerning articles, word order, and prepositions (e.g., 'in the all age group', 'the women proportion was higher that of men', 'the male proportion with the age also showed a steady growth'). Punctuation and capitalization are also erratic, with sentences starting with lowercase letters ('overall'). Despite these errors, meaning is rarely impeded, and communication remains clear. This reflects the characteristics of Band 5.5 to 6.0, rounded to 6.0 for successful communication of complex sentences.
