Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the bar chart well, presenting a clear overview and reporting key data points for both Australian men and women across different age groups in 2010. The student successfully identifies peak participation rates, such as 52.8% for young men aged 15-24, and makes relevant comparisons between genders. However, there are minor inaccuracies in the interpretation of the age ranges mentioned in the introduction (stating 'from age period of 24 to over 65' whereas the chart starts at 15) and some minor omissions regarding intermediate data. Overall, the task is addressed competently, satisfying the requirements for a Band 6.5 or solid Band 6, leaning toward Band 6.0 due to some slight imprecisions in reporting.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is arranged coherently with a logical overall progression. Paragraphing is utilised to separate the introduction, general trends, and specific gender breakdowns. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore', although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive ('Furthermore the number increases...'). Referencing is generally clear, though occasional mechanical links affect the natural flow of ideas. Paragraphing is sufficient and appropriate for a short analytical report. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptor for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'proportion', 'participation', and 'sudden decline'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('porportion', 'twienties', 'eary', 'activites') and awkward phrasing such as 'who hit gym on regular bases' and 'in men workout is more popular'. These lexical errors and slip-ups occasionally distract the reader, though they do not impede overall communication. The vocabulary control is characteristic of a Band 5.5 to 6.0 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and comparative structures. However, there are frequent grammatical inaccuracies, missing articles, and punctuation errors, such as missing commas or placing spaces before commas (e.g., 'Australia , who hit gym'). Examples like 'the rate of daily exercise in men rise to' (subject-verb agreement) and 'from the age of 45 to onwards' demonstrate persistent errors in grammar and prepositions. While meaning is generally recoverable, the frequency of errors places this firmly in the Band 5.0 range.
