IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given chart illustrates the proportion of men and women in different age groups who did physical activity regularly in Australia in 2010.
Overall, women recorded higher rates of regular physical activity than men in all age groups except 15–24. While the participation rate for men generally increased among older age groups after reaching a low of 39.5%, the figure for women remained relatively high, at around 50% or above, before the two genders became almost equal among those aged 65 and over.
It was seen that from the age of 15 to 24, 52.8% of males did physical activity but females were fewer 47.7%. In contrast to, 25 to 34 age group the proportion of women who did physical work increased to 48.9% but the average of males declined to 42.2%. For three different age groups of males and females from 35 to 64, the proportion of women who did physical exercise steadily grew to more than 52% and the percentage of males were 39.5%, 43.1% and 45.1%. Furthermore, in the age group of 65 and over the proportions of males and females who did physical tasks were almost the same 46.7%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons between Australian men and women across different age groups in 2010. An adequate overview is provided in the second sentence, noting the general trends and similarities/differences. Specific data points are cited to support the description, such as mentioning the peak for women and the lowest point for men at 39.5%. However, there is a minor inaccuracy in grouping or misstating data points in the body paragraph, where the phrasing 'the percentage of males were 39.5%, 43.1% and 45.1%' lacks clear association with specific age brackets within that compressed sentence structure. Overall, the task is addressed well, fulfilling the requirements for Band 6.5 to 7.0, with solid coverage of key data.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is arranged logically with an introduction, an overview, and a detailed body paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction/overview from the detailed body content. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, such as 'Overall', 'While', and 'In contrast to'. However, there are some awkward transitions and referencing issues, particularly in sentences like 'In contrast to, 25 to 34 age group the proportion of women who did physical work increased to 48.9%', which shows mechanical and slightly flawed cohesive control. The logical progression is maintained overall, but referencing and cohesion could be smoother and more flexible.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using appropriate terms related to the prompt such as 'proportion', 'participation rate', and 'age groups'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary or paraphrasing ('did physical activity regularly', 'did physical work', 'did physical exercise'). However, some collocations are unnatural or repetitive, such as 'did physical work' and 'did physical tasks', which do not fit the context of leisure-time physical activity as well as 'engaged in physical activity' or 'exercised'. Minor lexical inaccuracies prevent the score from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over clause structures through the use of subordinating conjunctions like 'while' and 'before'. However, there are notable grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the body paragraph. For example, 'females were fewer 47.7%' lacks a preposition and verb, 'In contrast to, 25 to 34 age group' contains punctuation and preposition errors, and subject-verb agreement or referencing slips occur in 'the percentage of males were'. These errors occasionally cause slight strain for the reader, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.
