IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The bar chart shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010. In this research they selected the age group of men and women from 15 years to 65 years and above. They divided the age the group with the difference of 10 years age gap.
So the first age group of 15 to 24 years shows there are 52percent of males and approximately 47percent of females do physical activties. The next age group of of 25 to 34 years shows there are 42percent of males and 48percent of females do physical activties. The age group of 35 to 44 years of male show less percentage rate of doing physical activities as compared to females the difference is approximately of 10%. If we have a look on the next age group of 45 to 54years the this is almost same the previous group. The rate of doing physical activities is almost same in the age geoup 55 to 64. But as we go forward and check the next age group that is 65 or above there is almost no difference in the men and women rate of doing physical actuvities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to summarise the main features of the bar chart, noting specific age groups and making some basic comparisons between men and women. For example, they correctly point out that in the 15 to 24 age group, 52 percent of males and approximately 47 percent of females do physical activities. However, the response lacks a clear, overarching overview, which is essential for a Band 6 or higher. Furthermore, there are some inaccuracies and vague statements, such as 'this is almost same the previous group.' The candidate also misinterprets the chart's scope slightly by stating 'they selected the age group of men and women from 15 years to 65 years and above' as part of the research methodology rather than simply describing the visual data. Overall, the task is addressed partially, corresponding to a Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response demonstrates some basic organisation, moving sequentially through the age groups from youngest to oldest. However, there is no clear paragraphing; the entire response is written as a single block of text, which significantly hinders progression. Cohesive devices are repetitive and overly simplistic, heavily relying on phrases like 'The next age group' and 'If we have a look on the next age group.' Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the lack of a proper introduction and conclusion means there is no clear overall progression. Paragraphing is absent entirely. These features place the response firmly at Band 5.0 for coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic, repetitive, and minimally adequate for the task. The student repeatedly uses phrases like 'age group', 'doing physical activities', and 'percentage rate' without attempting a wider range of synonyms. There are also noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'percentage rate of doing physical activities' instead of participation rates, and spelling mistakes like 'activties' and 'geoup'. Less common lexical items are largely absent. While communication is not severely impeded because the basic numbers are conveyed, the limited range and frequent vocabulary errors restrict the score to a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, run-on sentences, and missing prepositions or conjunctions. For instance, the opening sentence contains a redundant clause ('In this research they selected...'), and sentences such as 'The age group of 35 to 44 years of male show less percentage rate' suffer from subject-verb agreement issues ('male show') and awkward phrasing. Punctuation is also neglected, with a lack of commas to break up long, convoluted clauses. Because errors are frequent and occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, this performance aligns with Band 5.0.
