IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The given chart illustrates the percentage of men and women in different age groups who participated in physical activity regularly in Australia in 2010.
Overall, women had higher participation rates than men in all age groups except 15–24. Women recorded their highest figure among 45–54-year-olds, while the rates for both genders were almost the same in the 65-and-over group.
It was seen that from the age of 15 to 24, 52.8% of males participated in physical activity but only 47.7% of females participated. In contrast, in the 25 to 34 age group the proportion of women who participated in physical activity increased to 48.9% but the percentage of males declined to 42.2%. Across the three age groups from 35 to 64, women consistently recorded higher rates of physical activity, at over 52%, whereas the figures for men were 39.5%, 43.1% and 45.1%, respectively. Furthermore, in the age group of 65 and over the percentage of males and females who exercised was almost the same at 46.7%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The student covers all parts of the task well, providing a clear summary of the main features and making relevant comparisons between the genders across the different age groups. The overview paragraph successfully highlights key trends, such as women having higher participation rates overall except in the youngest cohort, and correctly notes the convergence in the 65 and over bracket. Specific data points are accurately cited from the chart, such as citing 52.8% for young males and 47.7% for females, and correctly reporting the peak for women in the 45 to 54 group at 53.3%. All details are factually grounded in the source data without major omissions or misinterpretations. This fulfills the criteria for a high band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically sequenced and easy to follow. Ideas are structured with an appropriate introduction, a clear overview paragraph, and a detailed body paragraph. Cohesive devices are used effectively to guide the reader through the comparisons, using phrases like 'In contrast', 'Across the three age groups', and 'Furthermore'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate the overview from the specific data breakdown. Referencing is clear throughout, and the progression of information from youngest to oldest age groups makes the data easy to digest. Cohesion is well managed, contributing to a smooth reading experience.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate and flexible range of vocabulary suited to academic writing. Phrases such as 'participated in physical activity', 'proportion of women', and 'consistently recorded higher rates' are deployed accurately. Less common lexical items and collocations are attempted successfully, such as 'declined', 'convergence', and 'bracket' or 'proportion'. There are only minor occurrences of repetition ('participated in physical activity' is repeated multiple times), but word choice and spelling are generally precise. The vocabulary is sufficient to allow fluent communication of the statistical trends without impeding the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The writer uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating subordinate clauses effectively (e.g., 'while the rates for both genders were almost the same' and 'although the percentage of males declined'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and control of grammar and punctuation is generally strong. There are very few minor slips or awkward constructions, but the structural range stops short of the absolute flexibility found at higher bands. Punctuation is accurate, and tense consistency is maintained well throughout the response. Overall, grammatical control is solid.
