Student answer (Band 7.0)

The given chart illustrates the percentage of men and women in different age groups who participated in physical activity regularly in Australia in 2010.

Overall, women had higher participation rates than men in all age groups except 15–24. Women recorded their highest figure among 45–54-year-olds, while the rates for both genders were almost the same in the 65-and-over group.

It was seen that from the age of 15 to 24, 52.8% of males participated in physical activity but only 47.7% of females participated. In contrast, in the 25 to 34 age group the proportion of women who participated in physical activity increased to 48.9% but the percentage of males declined to 42.2%. Across the three age groups from 35 to 64, women consistently recorded higher rates of physical activity, at over 52%, whereas the figures for men were 39.5%, 43.1% and 45.1%, respectively. Furthermore, in the age group of 65 and over the percentage of males and females who exercised was almost the same at 46.7%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The student covers all parts of the task well, providing an accurate summary of the main features and making relevant comparisons between genders across the age groups. The overview correctly highlights the main trend that women had higher participation rates overall except in the youngest cohort, and notes the convergence at the oldest age group. Specific data points, such as 52.8% for males aged 15-24 and 53.3% for women aged 45-54, are accurately cited from the chart. The response is fully developed and satisfies all the requirements of an Academic Task 1 report.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

Ideas are logically sequenced, moving smoothly from a general overview to specific body paragraph details. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In contrast', and 'Furthermore' are managed well to guide the reader through the data comparisons. Paragraphing is used appropriately, separating the introduction/overview from the detailed body analysis. Referencing is clear throughout, contributing to an easy and logical progression of information.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student uses an adequate and appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, incorporating functional terms such as 'proportion', 'percentage', 'participation rates', and 'decline'. While there is some repetition of common verbs like 'participated' and 'recorded', the lexical choices are precise enough to convey the data accurately. There are no notable spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including dependent clauses ('while the rates for both genders were almost the same') and compound constructions. Grammatical control is generally strong with a high proportion of error-free sentences. Punctuation is accurate, and subject-verb agreement is maintained throughout, though the range of complex grammatical forms could be slightly broader to reach the highest band.
