Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given chart illustrates the percentage of men and women in different age groups who participated in physical activity regularly in Australia in 2010.
Overall, women had higher participation rates than men in all age groups except 15–24. Women recorded their highest figure among 45 to 54 year-olds, while the rates for both genders were almost the same in the 65-and-over group.
It was seen that from the age of 15 to 24, 52.8% of males participated in physical activity but only 47.7% of females participated. In contrast, in the 25 to 34 age group the proportion of women who participated in physical activity increased to 48.9% but the percentage of males declined to 42.2%. Across the three age groups from 35 to 64, women consistently recorded higher rates of physical activity, at over 52%, whereas the figures for men were 39.5%, 43.1% and 45.1%, respectively. Furthermore, in the age group of 65 and over the percentage of males and females who exercised was almost the same at 46.7%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student covers all parts of the task well, providing an accurate summary of the main features and making relevant comparisons between the genders and age groups. For example, the overview correctly notes that 'women had higher participation rates than men in all age groups except 15–24'. The student accurately reports specific figures from the chart, such as '52.8% of males participated in physical activity' for the 15 to 24 age group and '46.7%' for the 65 and over group. The selection of data is logical and well-supported, meeting the requirements of a Band 7 response by addressing all parts with clear comparisons and precise data reporting.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information is divided into a suitable introduction, an overarching overview paragraph, and a detailed body paragraph. Cohesive devices are used appropriately to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Overall', 'In contrast', and 'Furthermore'. Referencing is clear and accurate, as seen when the student contrasts the male and female percentages across different age groups. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring the text flows smoothly from general trends to specific data points, fitting the descriptors for Band 7.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with adequate flexibility and precision for the task. Words and phrases such as 'participated in physical activity', 'proportion', 'decline', and 'consistently recorded' demonstrate a good control of topic-specific language. There are also attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'proportion' and 'decline'. While the range is not overly complex or sophisticated, it is entirely appropriate for an Academic Task 1 response and allows the message to be communicated clearly without any noticeable errors, aligning well with Band 7.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response displays a good variety of complex structures alongside simple sentence forms. The student successfully incorporates subordinate clauses and comparative structures, such as 'while the rates for both genders were almost the same' and 'although the percentage of males declined'. Grammatical control is strong, with frequent error-free sentences and accurate punctuation. Minor slips are absent, and the overall construction of complex sentences shows a solid command of grammar that never impedes communication, comfortably securing a Band 7 score.
