IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the percentage of Australian men and women in different age groups who did regular physical activity in 2010.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.0)

The bar chart provides information about the proportion of individuals who did fitness activities in Australia including men and women in different age brackets by the sources from 2010.

Overall, the highest amount of females have done exercises in the group of 40-54. The minimum number of females has done workout in the group of 85 and over. According to the chart, it is clear that females has done exercises more than males.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 3.5

The response is severely under length, containing only 73 words compared to the required 150-word minimum. This significantly limits the writer's ability to present a fully developed overview and report the main features. While the student attempts an overview and highlights some data points, several statements are factually inaccurate based on the chart (e.g. stating the age group is 40-54 instead of 45-54, and referencing an '85 and over' group which does not exist in the visual data). Due to the very limited coverage and failure to meet the minimum word count requirement, Task Achievement is penalised heavily.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The text is divided into an introduction and a very brief body paragraph functioning as an overview. However, because the text is only 73 words long, true paragraphing and logical progression cannot be properly evaluated. Simple cohesive devices like 'Overall' and 'According to the chart' are used, but referencing is poor ('the highest amount of females have done exercises in the group of 40-54'). The lack of sufficient development makes it difficult to demonstrate effective organizational skills.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, such as 'proportion of individuals', 'men and women', and 'did exercises'. There are also lexical inaccuracies or inappropriate collocations, such as 'highest amount of females' (amount is used for uncountable nouns; number should be used) and 'has done workout'. The range is limited and minimally adequate to express simple ideas, but lacks precision and flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5

The student attempts a few complex structures, but grammatical accuracy is weak. There is a subject-verb agreement error ('females has done'), and prepositional use is occasionally unnatural ('by the sources from 2010'). While simple sentence forms are generally understandable, the limited length of the response restricts the variety of grammatical structures demonstrated. Errors are noticeable and cause some distraction for the reader.
